The Ferris suspension argument at the right capex
Ferris’s whole engineering proposition — independent suspension at all four corners — applies as much to the IS700Z as to the heavier ISX 2200. What the IS700Z does is land that proposition at a capex point roughly 25% below the ISX, by accepting marginally lighter chassis spec and a less aggressive duty rating.
For contractors whose operators put 300–500 hours per machine per year, that compromise is the right one. The ISX 2200 is engineered for 600+ hour seasons under full continuous load — and for fleets running at that volume, the ISX premium pays back in operator retention and machine longevity. For everyone else, the IS700Z gives them the suspension benefit without the heavy-fleet capex.

Who actually buys an IS700Z
Three common buyer profiles. First: a landscape contractor running 4–8 machines where operator hours are real but not at heavy-fleet volume — schools, corporate grounds, residential estate work. Second: a grounds-maintenance team for a small-to-mid council where suspension is specified to reduce operator injury claims and the budget doesn’t extend to ISX 2200 capex. Third: a private estate manager covering 30–80 acres where the operator does most of the mowing themselves — and is often the same person making the buying decision, in which case operator comfort weighs more on the spec sheet than it would for a fleet manager.
The quiet observation about Ferris machines in the used market: they hold residual value notably better than rigid-frame equivalents. A four-year-old IS700Z with documented service history typically trades at 55–60% of new — versus 40–45% for a comparable rigid-frame ZT. (Ferris don’t put this in the brochure either, but every used commercial dealer prices it in.)
The tradeoff
If your operators run 600+ hours per machine, the ISX 2200 is genuinely the better engineering match — heavier chassis, deeper duty rating, longer life under continuous load. If your hours are under 300, a rigid-frame ZT (Kubota ZG227, JD Z720E) costs less and serves. The IS700Z is the right answer in the middle band.
